Volunteer Development

GOALS
  1. To build a meaningful relationship between those being helped and our volunteers
  2. To equip and build volunteers with skills and values
  3. To develop volunteers to have a heart for social concerns

Definition of a Volunteer
A volunteer is someone who goes beyond his or her duty to respond to a need in the society with no concern for monetary returns.

Misconceptions of Volunteering

  1. Volunteers provide free labour.
Volunteers are not free labourers. Although they are not paid, REACH acknknowledges the talents of the volunteers and invests in development programmes, training workshops and year-end appreciation gatherings for them. Our volunteer coordinator also spends time to support the volunteers.

  2. I have to do whatever work the organisation assigns.
Volunteers are matched to the area of service that they are interested in and are best able to contribute to, for the well being of the people they work with. At the same time, we hope that the volunteer involvement will contribute to his or her personal development. Any additional work, beyond the assignment, will only be given when necessary and accepted by the volunteers.

  3. I can come as and when I like since it is voluntary work.
Voluntary work requires a certain level of commitment since the volunteer¡¯s presence affects people¡¯s lives and the operation and effectiveness of the programme. It is therefore necessary to inform the volunteer coordinator in the event that you are unable to attend any part of the programme after confirmation of your availability.

  4. There is nothing I can gain or work towards to
We value the volunteer's growth in terms of growing in passion for social concerns as well as personal development. Volunteers are encouraged to set goals for themselves and keep a progress journal. These materials are available upon request. In addition, you can approach the staff for help with regards to your volunteer work or any personal issues you may encounter while volunteering with us.
