Parenting Teenagers – A father’s thoughts

I find parenting teenagers the most challenging, most trying and yet most revealing of all the parenting stages. It’s almost like looking after puppies – when they are young, they look so cute, cuddly and controllable. Once puppies develop into young dogs, they become handsome (like the father), pretty (like the mother), bigger, stronger, and louder than what they used to be! Soon, these young ones will “develop wings”, and gear up to fly out of the nest!

Love, Really Loving your children

Do you love your children? Of course you do. You will do anything for them. Anything, so long as it concerns their safety and well-being … and their future too. This is love, right? Well, it does look like it.

But do you really love your children? I mean like relational love? Not so sure, isn’t it? The love you have is probably more like parent-child love - like protective love at play. And this is where many problems with parents and children lie, especially with teenage children. They somehow seem to think that we parents don’t really love them.

Let’s see how we can take a fresh look at how to love our children. If we want to love them the way “love” is understood by them (and probably by the rest of their peers), what will be the ways to show our love? Let’s count the ways …
